John starts moonlighting as a bodyguard for his rich friend's girlfriend, but he catches her in the act of being unfaithful. When he confronts her, she tells him that she's being blackmailed, so Kelly meets the blackmailer and advises him not to do it again. Medavoy doesn't want to tell his wife about his problem, which displeases Donna, and he thinks he still may want a divorce. The wheelchair-bound veteran takes his mugger's hostage. Laura invites John out to dinner and tells him about her serious relationship. John is best man at an impromptu wedding.

A bomb explodes in a sleazy motel. Hours later, a second bomb explodes in the back of a station wagon. Jessica (Lisa Vidal) gets a soda from the ECPD vending machine, and discovers it's attached to a bomb inside the machine. Willitz consoles her, as a bomb expert diffuses the situation. Meanwhile, Len, who is having marital problems, thinks he is falling in love with Lynette, his deceased partner's widow. He goes to her to confess his feelings. Leslie finally meets the daughter she gave up for adoption, ten years before. Terry and Russel respond to a call about a possible truck bomb only to discover a stash of marijuana buried under a load of manure. The bomber turns out to be the owner of the station wagon that blew up. Jim Marsh, Randy Willitz and Mike chase him into a drainage channel. The bomber has dynamite strapped to his chest and threatens to blow Marsh and himself up. Marsh convinces the man that his children need him.

But Fitch's curiosity about some artistic doodles leads the case toward another suspect. When Fitch's ex-wife flies to Detroit to leave Bobby with him for a planned visit, she drops a bombshell. Unbeknownst to the detectives, everyone will soon be in jeopardy.

Leaving Washington to guard Bobby, Fitch, Longford and Mahajan head out to ensnare Stram. In order to save his family and the squad, Fitch will have to choose which side of the law to come down on. Longford wonders if it's too late to postpone his retirement.

An exhausted E.R. doctor's error results in a man's death, and an upset Heather seeks Mike's help when the hospital administration refuses to take action after she reveals that the doctor falsified the man's chart to cover up his mistake; Mike convinces a reluctant Heather to give the story to reporter Emily Carson, whose investigation results in Heather's being fired and blacklisted on a trumped-up charge; Mike's concern that Heather may have to move far from Philadelphia with Mikey to find work puts a strain on his budding relationship with Faith, who begins to doubt that Mike is over Heather; Mike enlists the help of Ryan Ambrose, a psychiatrist at the hospital who supports Heather, in obtaining information that convinces the E.R. doctor to back up Heather's account of the patient's death and to admit his mistakes to Emily; Heather is reinstated, and she and Mike realize that it's over after spending the night together, leaving Mike free to commit himself to a relationship with Faith, and Heather free to begin dating Ryan; after Grizz defies the bishop when he's told to disregard Beth's successes with the program and fire her solely because she's getting divorced, he realizes that Mike may be correct about his real, unconscious motivation.
