WhatIfSports 1.01 - "Seals v Nordiques"
Best of 5 Series between the 1973-74 California Golden Seals and the 1981-82 Quebec Nordiques
Game #1 at Quebec
Golden Seals  3  @  11  Nordiques
Things  looked promising for the Seals as veteran Reggie Leach scored just 7 seconds into the game beating Quebec goalie Dan Bouchard. However, Anton Stastny responded for the Nordiques just 9 seconds later beating Gilles Meloche. Peter Stastny, Real Clouthier, and Andre Dupont continued the onslaught for Quebec making it 4-1 still in the first. Ivan Boldirev responded for the Seals, but Marian Stastny would then get in the act at 11:03 making it 5-2 for the Nordiques. This was all for Gilles Meloche who was replaced by Bob Champous in the net. That seemed to settle things down as there was no more scoring in the 1st period.
However, the Nordiques found the net 4 more times unanswered in the second peroiod with goals by Marian Stastny, Michel Goulet, and two by Dale Hunter.9-2 Nordiques after two.
The thrid period saw Marc Tardif find the back of the net, and in an unorthodox move the Seals pulled Champous from the net and put Meloche back in. Dale Hunter then got ejected from the game for a boarding penalty which set off a scrum. However, even shorthanded with a goon on the ice, Basil McRae found the net to make it 11-2 Nordiques, before Ivan Boldirev scored to finish the game 11-3.
Game #2 @ Quebec
California Golden Seals  6  @  8  Quebec Nordiques
[Quebec leads series 2-1]
Dan Bouchard started the game against Gilles Meloche, but would they finish the game?
It took until 8:07 before the first goal of the game, by Peter Stastny, followed 48 seconds later by his brother Marian to make it 2-0 in short order. Walt McKechnie responded for the Seals on the powerplay, only to have Normand Rochefort get the 2 goal lead right back for the hometeam. McKechnie scored his second of the period though to bring the Seals to within one, only to have Michel Goulet pot his own rebound to make it 4-2 at the end of the 1st period in another shootout.
The second period saw more action as Reggie Leach scored to close the gap to 4-3, but when Michel Goulet responded again to make it 5-3, Gilles Meloche was pulled for the second straight game replaced by Bob Champoux.  This seemed to spark Joey Johnston of the Seals who scored two straight goals within a minute, but unfortunately they came after a Wilf Paiement Nordique goal so the Seals still trailed 6-5. Marian Stastny for Quebec, and Hillard Graves for the Seals traded goals and it was 7-6 Nordiques after two periods.
Michel Goulet scored the only goal of the 3rd period to give him a hat trick and the Nordiques an 8-6 win.
So who will start in net for the Seals when they return home for game 3?
Game #3
Quebec Nordiques 12 @ 4 California Golden Seals
[Quebec wins series 3-0]
Well Gilles Meloche started the game for the hometown Seals.
Wilf Paiement, Real Clouthier, Marian Stastny, and Michel Goulet all scored to make it 4-0 before the halfway mark of the period. Gary Croteau responded for the Seals but when Robbie Ftorek scored that was it for Meloche. Joey Johnston scored two more for the Seals, but Paiement and Hunter responded for the Nordiques.
The second period saw Marian Stastny and Andre Dupont score for the Nordiques, and for the second time in the series Dale Hunter received a 5 minute penalty and a game ejection.
The 3rd period saw Joey Johnston finish the hat trick for the Seals but it was little consolation as the destruction was completed by Peter Stastny, Andre Dupont, and Marc Tardif.
