Jack Killian retires from the San Francisco Police Department after accidentally shooting his partner. He is offered a job as a late night talk radio host. A serial killer begins calling Jack which pulls Jack back into the crime fighting world.

Jack receives a phone call from a man stating he is holding a suspected murderer in his personal custody. He continues to use Jack's show as a forum for his demands.

Sam and Quincy are attending a job fair for students when a woman falls down an escalator, just after shouting at someone who has been following her. While she is in hospital it is discovered she has a severe case of posttraumatic amnesia. A high price assassin is caught in her hospital room not long afterwards and leads to even more interest in who she is and why someone would want her dead.

The band plans to get the date of the tickets switched by posing as Van Halen. - The band also neglects to let Sly in as manager of the band.

Matt is determined to win the Battle of the Bands contest. The California Dreams are up against their biggest competition- Bradley and the Billionaires. Sly's idea of how to win the contest? One of the judges, Angela, likes Matt. All Matt needs to do is date her to swing the vote. Tony also thinks about getting an earring, until Tiffani tells him how they pierce an ear.

Joe is being blackmailed. Someone tells Mike about Joe and Ginny. Joey catches a murderer of a young Russian immigrant mother. Paul makes a delivery to a late night poker game. He stays to play, losing his job and winning $500 that his opponents cannot pay him. Mike wants to bring a foster kid he recently met, home, but Erin is against it. Erin feels like she doesn't want to be like Mary, so she decides she wants to go back to school. Mary talks to a priest.

Throughout the day Tony says racist comments that shed light on Gayle's background. Jim Marsh (David Keith) spends the day with his three daughters, each from a separate marriage. Lenny (Matt Craven) is introduced to his new partner Leslie (Aunjanue Ellis). They report to an abandoned pool, where they find an abandoned baby drowning. The baby dies and the mother is arrested. Russell (Louis Mustillo) and Terry (Matthew Beck) respond to an assault call where a man has accidently run over a dog only to have the dog's owner follow him and punch him in the face.
