Greg tells Ruth it's time for her to go back to Africa. Joshua tells Cathy he doesn't want to move out because he can't abandon Val. Val says not to blame it on her. Ben has a reporter check out Ackerman. He finds that Ackerman has gambling debts, and they think that was his motive for agreeing to steal the babies. The reporter gives Ben a list of unethical adoption agencies. Ben and Karen go to one, posing as a couple who wants to adopt, and say they were recommended by Ackerman. When they leave, the lawyer calls Ackerman and tells him Karen came to see him, and she was just as Ackerman described her.

The story complicates, however, when repeated attempts are made on Lara's life. Eventually, the shaken Lara decides to trust Killion's instincts and precautionary methods, and the pair embark on a difficult and often perilous cross-country journey, with the assassins close on their heels.

They finally admit that Beulah lost their life savings in a land development scam. The Careys plan to stay with Drew for a few weeks until they receive their claim in a class-action lawsuit. Unfortunately, they lose the case. George and Beulah take over the house and prevent Drew from having any privacy. After his parents spoil a date, he begins spending all of his time at the store. He finally resolves to ask his parents to leave by laying a guilt trip on them. They prove too tough to crack, and Drew ends up staying with Lewis and Oswald.

Bolander and Felton are suspended for 22 weeks without pay for incidents related to activities at a police convention in Washington, DC. Howard plans to take the sergeant's exam. Pembleton and Bayliss are assigned to investigate the death of a body found at an arson. At the scene they meet an arson detective that clashes with Frank's working style. Frank hesitates chasing a suspect, and later we learn that his wife is pregnant. Munch also decides to take the exam, and when the wagering begins on who is going to pass, everyone favors Howard. While the detectives are debating whether the fire was set to cover the murder, another fire is started.

Bobby is arrested and tried for the deaths of three police officers, after he tips off a client, using information obtained during a sleepover at Helen's, that the police are planning to raid him. Jimmy has to defend himself when an opposing attorney claims he's unfit to practice law.

Erskine and Rhodes are sent after Clayton. Before they can reach the killer, Clayton is in a remote lodge with hostages. Erskine, in a desperate bid to prevent more death, changes places with a hunter headed toward the lodge.
