2011 Weekend Daytime Preview

Weekend days are for sports, sports, and more sports on Abaza TV.

NFL Football, CFL Football, NCAA Football, even some Canadian College footall, dominate the schedule.

However there is also some more rare or unique sports offerings which will be shown under the Abaza TV anthology banner "Sports Machine".

In addition, Saturday afternoons, typically at noon will be the continuation of the UFC PPV's presented in chronological order starting with UFC 88 which is where we left off.

10:00am - Classic 80's Video Countdown. Join Abaza TV as we count down the top 25 songs from this week, but not THIS week, but from different weeks primarily in the 80's

2011 Daytime Latenight Preview

Starting in September, the following will be the rough schedule for latenight on Abaza TV, which of course is always subject to change as the wind blows.

Midnights on Abaza TV will be the critically aclaimed "Friday Night Lights", following the exploits of a small Texas high school and the football team.

1:00am, will be another critically aclaimed show, "The West Wing" following the Presidency of Jed Bartlett.

Other programs will include Monday Night Football and NHL Hockey presented on a tape delay basis when regular prime time TV is shown instead.

Hulk Hogan's MCW is scheduled for Wednesday nights (Thursday mornings) at 2:00am.

The mini-series, "The Pacific" is slated for a run on Friday nights (Saturday mornings) at 2:00am.

A variety of other sports such as high school football, marathons, etc will be shown under the anthology banner of Sports Machine.

classic wrestling from River City Wrestling will be shown most mornings at 4:00am.

"Homeland" will get a run Sunday nights (Monday mornings) at 2:00am. This will be followed by "Hell on Wheels" at 3:00am.

2011 Sunday Night Preview

Sunday nights are looking to be the most exciting and explosive nights this year on Abaza TV. There is such a vast amount of great content to pick up from the networks and cable but it all starts at 9:00pm or after creating a programming logjam.

Tentatively Abaza TV has scheduled Walking Dead's second season (AMC) to start at 9:00pm, followed by Pan Am (ABC) at 10:00pm (my most anticipated new show of the year), CSI Miami (CBS) will follow at 11:00pm, and two cable shows are scheduled to run at 2:00am and 3:00am respectively; Homeland (Showtime) and Hell on Wheels (AMC).

All of that does not even include possible preemptions for Winnipeg Jets hockey as well as Sunday Night NFL Football, the CFL playoffs and Grey Cup. Finally, it also makes no mention of one of Abaza TV's favorite shows Mad Men (AMC) which will likely return in the winter.

Pan Am
Passion, jealousy and espionage... They do it all - and they do it at 30,000 feet. The style of the 1960s, the energy and excitement of the Jet Age and a drama full of sexy entanglements deliciously mesh in this thrilling and highly-original new series. In this modern world, air travel represents the height of luxury and Pan Am is the biggest name in the business. Hell on Wheels
After breaking the Western mold with the hit mini-series "Broken Trail," AMC returns to the genre with the epic drama "Hell On Wheels," starring Anson Mount (City by the Sea, Cook County), Common (Just Wright, Date Night), Colm Meaney (Get Him to the Greek), Dominique McElligott (Moon), Ben Esler (The Pacific), Philip Burke (Mercy), and Eddie Spears (Into the West). The series is written and produced by Joe and Tony Gayton (Faster, Murder By Numbers) and John Shiban (X-Files, Breaking Bad). The project is developed by Endemol USA and Jeremy Gold, Endemol USA's SVP of scripted programming serves as executive producer. David Goldberg is Chairman of Endemol North America. The pilot is directed by David von Ancken (Californication, Seraphim Falls). "Hell On Wheels," is set to premiere on the network with a ten episode run on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 10PM ET/PT. "Hell On Wheels" transports audiences back to post Civil War America and examines the struggles and hardships of rebuilding and repairing our country after the bloodiest war on American soil. The series examines the railroad's institutionalized greed and corruption, the immigrant experience, the plight of the newly emancipated African-Americans during Reconstruction, and the ravaging of the Native American land and people, in the name of progress. The main throughline of "HELL ON WHEELS" is the story of Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) and his quest for revenge over the wartime death of his wife. Over time, "Hell on Wheels" chronicles this potent turning point in our nation's history, and how uncivilized the business of civilization can be.

Homeland
Hot off its panel sessions at Comic-Con today, SHOWTIME has released an exclusive First Look at Season 6 of the network's signature original series DEXTER, and never-before-seen footage in a brand new trailer for its original drama series HOMELAND, starring Claire Danes and Damian Lewis. The HOMELAND panel featured actress Morena Baccarin (V, Firefly) and executive producer Howard Gordon. HOMELAND is a psychological thriller that tells the story of Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes), a CIA officer battling her own demons, who becomes convinced that the intelligence that led to the rescue of Sgt. Nick Brody (Damian Lewis) a U.S. soldier who had been missing and presumed dead for nine years, was a set-up and may be connected to an al-Qaeda plot to be carried out on American soil. Baccarin plays the role of Jessica Brody, Brody's (Lewis) intrepid and complicated wife. HOMELAND premieres October 2, at 10 p.m. ET/PT only on SHOWTIME.

2011 Saturday Night Preview

Saturday nights are all right for fighting on Abaza TV. The iconic Hockey Night in Canada will take up most Saturday nights from 6:00pm to midnight. However, some nights it will be bumped for other programming if required. One of those other programming choices depending on match-ups could be ABC's Saturday Night College Football. Other programs set to bump HNIC include CFL Football when the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are playing, and on Oct 29th American Pro Wrestling's "To Hell and Back" and again on December 17th for the Annivesary Spectacular.

The only regular network offering from Saturday night that Abaza TV will try and fit in is the irreverent Rules of Engagement (CBS) starring David Spade. The time slot for that show will move all over the schedule to whenever there is an opening.

2011 Friday Night Preview

Friday Nights pays tribute to the coolest game on ice, and the short lived CTV broadcasts in the mid 80's. The default NHL games will be the 7:00pm EST, 6:00pm Abaza broadcast, with preference given to the Southeast teams and New Jersey and the Islanders. Second round of preference would be teams like Nashville, Chicago, Columbus, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo. However, this year with Winnipeg competing in the NHL's southeast division they will be first priority.

Chuck also returns for a final abbreviated season from NBC. The placement will be on Friday nights, but because of the NHL games the airing time will vary, but will most often be either at 9:00pm or 9:30pm.

Two other possible pick-ups still being evaluated for quality as well as availability are Strike Back (Cinemax) 

Strike Back
This high-octane action series focuses on a charismatic former U.S. Special Forces operative who teams up with a British military unit to stop an international terrorist group. Sullivan Stapleton ("Animal Kingdom") and Philip Winchester ("Fringe") star along with Amanda Mealing and Eva Birthistle. Executive producers are Andy Harries and Elaine Pyke; co-executive producers are Dan Percival and Frank Spotnitz; Michael Casey produces. The ten-episode season launches Aug. 12

2011 Thursday Night Preview

Thursday night will feature a full slate of network TV shows, a mix of new and returning.

Charlie's Angels from ABC kicks things off at 7:00pm, but the chances of that show surviving expectations and staying on Abaza TV are said to be less then 50/50. This is followed by The Office from NBC, the first season without Steve Carrell, and I Hate My Teenage Daughter (see the Wednesday night preview for full info on this day shifted program). Big Bang Theory (CBS) and How To Be a Gentleman (CBS) fill out the regular schedule.

Look for a return by 30 Rock (NBC) as a winter replacement for likely either Teenage Daughter or How To Be a Genetleman, although Big Bang Theory is possible too.

Both NFL Football and NHL Hockey will also represent a constant change in schedule which may see some poorer responding shows dropped on select weeks or moved to very late night.

Charlie's Angels
Everyone deserves a second chance -- even a thief, a street racer and a cop who got in a little too deep. After all, the three women who solve cases for their elusive boss, Charlie Townsend, are no saints. They're angels... Charlie's Angels. Set in Miami, this fun, glamorous, action-packed take on the 1970s smash hit series introduces us to three new angels, all fearless detectives, head-turning beauties and close friends. There's Abby (Rachael Taylor), a Park Avenue princess who became a world-class thief. Then there's Kate (Annie Ilonzeh), a Miami cop who fell from grace, losing both her career and her fiancé. Finally there's Gloria, a disgraced army lieutenant who has a way with explosives. When one of the angels' missions ends in Gloria's tragic death, Charlie persuades them to partner with Gloria's childhood friend, Eve (Minka Kelly), a street racer with a mysterious past. They may not know each other yet, but one thing's for sure -- Abby, Kate and Eve will always have each others' backs. How To Be a Gentleman
inspired by the book of the same name, is a comedy about the unlikely friendship between a traditional, refined writer and an unrefined personal trainer. Andrew Carlson (David Hornsby) is an etiquette columnist whose devotion to ideals from a more civilized time has lead to a life detached from modern society. Infectiously optimistic, Bert Lansing (Kevin Dillon) is a reformed "bad boy" from Andrew's past who inherited a fitness center, but can still be rude, loud and sloppy. When Andrew's editor, Jerry (Dave Foley), tells him to put a modern, sexy twist on his column or be fired, he hires Bert as a life coach in the hopes of learning to be less "gentle man" and more "real man." Andrew's mom, Diane (Nancy Lenehan), and his bossy sister, Janet (Mary Lynn Rajskub), support the plan, as would Janet's husband, Mike (Rhys Darby), if he was allowed to have an opinion. Though Andrew and Bert's views may be centuries apart, they may find they're each other's missing link. David Hornsby ("It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"), Adam Chase ("Friends"), Ted Schachter ("The Invention of Lying"), Joe Hipps and Modi Wiczyk are executive producers for CBS Television Studios.

2011 Wednesday Night Preview

Wednesday Nights are jam packed with original programming.

We start at 7:30pm with the new ABC sit-com Suburgatory. Criminal Minds from CBS returns at 8:00pm, followed by CSI at 9:00pm starring Ted Danson for the first year, and sophmore NBC show Harry's Law at 10:00pm. The jam packed night is not over though as Law & Order SVU starring two new detectives airs at 11:00pm.

While Criminal Minds is guaranteed its spot, and Harry's Law is likely to stay, look for either CSI or SVU to drop off the schedule by December, and whether Suburgatory suceeds or not is also up in the air.

I Hate My Teenage Daughter gets a late start on FOX, premiering on Nov 23rd. Due to that late start and the plethora of dramas available, it will be picked up by Abaza TV but moved to Thursday nights at 8:30pm following The Office.

Hulk Hogan's MCW from Tru TV which starts Sep 14th will also likely be aired but moved to a very late night time slot.

Suburgatory
Single father George only wants the best for his 16-year-old daughter, Tessa. So when he finds a box of condoms on her nightstand, he moves them out of their apartment in New York City to a house in the suburbs. But all Tessa sees is the horror of over-manicured lawns and plastic Franken-moms. Being in the 'burbs can be hell, but it also may just bring Tessa and George closer than they've ever been. Tessa (Jane Levy) and George (Jeremy Sisto) have been on their own ever since Tessa's mom pulled a "Kramer vs. Kramer" before she was even potty trained. So far, George has done a pretty good job of raising Tessa without a maternal figure in their lives, but suddenly he's feeling a little out of his league. So it's goodbye New York City and hello suburbs. At first Tessa is horrified by the big-haired, fake-boobed mothers and their sugar-free Red Bull-chugging kids. But little by little she and her dad begin finding a way to survive on the clean streets of the 'burbs. Sure, the neighbors might smother you with love while their kids stare daggers at your back, but underneath all that plastic and caffeine, they're really not half bad. And they do make a tasty pot roast. The show stars Jeremy Sisto ("Law & Order") as George Altman, Jane Levy ("Shameless") as Tessa Altman, Carly Chaikin ("The Last Song") as Dalia Royce, Allie Grant ("Weeds") as Lisa, Alan Tudyk ("V") as Noah Lerner and Cheryl Hines ("Curb Your Enthusiasm") as Dallas Royce. Ana Gasteyer ("Saturday Night Live") guest stars. Emily Kapnek ("Hung") writes and executive-produces this bitingly ironic single-camera comedy. "Suburgatory" was directed by Michael Fresco ("Raising Hope"), who also executive-produced the pilot. It is produced by Warner Bros. Television.

I Hate My Teenage Daughter
new multi-camera comedy about two best friends who are single moms struggling to raise their difficult and over-privileged teenage daughters. ANNIE (Emmy Award winner Jaime Pressly, "My Name Is Earl") and NIKKI (Tony Award winner Katie Finneran, "Wonderfalls") are former high school outcasts whose pasts inform their current parenting styles. Annie, who was raised in an ultra-strict, uber-religious household where she had little-to-no freedom, pretty much allows her daughter, SOPHIE (Kristi Lauren, "You"), to do whatever she wants. Nikki, once an unpopular, overweight social pariah, has reinvented herself as a pretty Southern belle whose top priority is providing her daughter, MACKENZIE (Aisha Dee, "Dead Gorgeous"), with the childhood she never had. Sophie and Mackenzie are also best friends, which leads to a lot of co-parenting for Annie and Nikki. They have given the girls everything they asked for and everything they never had: clothes, money and self-esteem. The unintended consequence is they have created two mean girls just like the ones who tortured them years ago. Sophie finds her mother embarrassing and mocks her at every opportunity, but she secretly needs her mom and knows that her behavior is not always appropriate. Mackenzie, on the other hand, is the more manipulative of the daughters - she knows how to work her mother's insecurities to her benefit. Annie's ex-husband, MATT (Eric Sheffer Stevens, "As The World Turns"), wants to be a good parent, but is too clueless to know what that even means. That leaves his brother, JACK (Kevin Rahm, "Desperate Housewives," "Judging Amy"), an attractive, high-powered attorney, to serve as more of a father figure for Sophie. Jack's meddling would annoy Annie more if she didn't have such a crush on him. GARY (Chad Coleman, "The Wire"), Nikki's ex, also tries to help raise his challenging daughter, but the couple's complicated relationship often makes his involvement more difficult. As their daughters begin to experience their first high school dances and other life-changing teen events, Annie and Nikki are often reminded of their own tortured adolescent years. But when Sophie and Mackenzie's mean-girl antics cross the line, the moms quickly realize that they must, for the first time, dole out some real punishment and fix what is broken. They have no idea how to do that, but they do know one thing: They can't do it without each other.


Hulk Hogan's MCW
Hulk Hogan, one of the legendary stars of pro wrestling, believes you need to start small if you want to win big. Now he's lending his expertise to the new Micro Championship Wrestling, where he gives little wrestlers advice on recruiting, training and mentoring. It's all with the goal of getting the MCW off the ground and into the arena. Hulk Hogan's MCW comes to truTV from Bischoff-Hervey Entertainment.

2011 Tuesday Night Preview

Tuesday evenings starting in September Abaza TV will feature two new prime time shows. Ringer will regularly be seen at 8:00pm and Unforgettable at 9:00pm. On weeks when they are not original broadcasts Abaza will likely substitute TSN's Tuesday NHL game. It will also be pre-empted for Winnipeg Jets NHL Hockey on Nov 29th, Dec 6th, Dec 13th, Dec 20th, and Dec 27th.


Ringer;
Sarah Michelle Gellar stars as a woman who, after witnessing a murder, goes on the run, hiding out by assuming the life of her wealthy identical twin sister - only to learn that her sister's seemingly idyllic life is just as complicated and dangerous as the one she's trying to leave behind. Bridget is six months sober and starting to turn her life around when she is the sole witness to a professional hit. Despite the assurances of her FBI protector, Agent Victor Machado, Bridget knows her life is on the line. She flees to New York, telling no one, not even her Narcotics Anonymous sponsor, Malcolm. Unforgettable

2011 Monday Night Preview

Monday evenings starting in September will feature only 1 regular TV show, the new and controversial The Playboy Club from NBC. Playboy Club will air at 9:00pm. On weeks where Playboy Club is not a new episode it will likely be bumped to later in the schedule (2:00am - 6:00am) to make room for Monday Night Football.

However, starting after Christmas Abaza TV will be adding the midseason FOX show Alcatraz to the line-up. Alcatraz would likely air at 8:00pm.

There is a slight chance that Abaza will pick up the FOX show Terra Nova after the pilot episode is viewed by Abaza TV executives. Other then Terra Nova there are no shows on the network or cable lineups of possible interest to Abaza TV at this time. However, with a plethora of cable shows of interest on Sunday night it is possible that one might be aired on Monday nights at 8:00pm.

Monday Night Football, as well as the occasional Winipeg Jets NHL hockey game will take center stage on Mondays this fall.

The Playboy Club (NBC)

Alcatraz (FOX) midseason
From executive producer J.J. Abrams (FRINGE, "Lost," "Star Trek" and the upcoming "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" and "Super 8") and writer and executive producer Elizabeth Sarnoff ("Lost," "Deadwood") comes ALCATRAZ, the chilling new thriller centered on America's most infamous prison and one-time home to the nation's most notorious murderers, rapists, kidnappers, thieves and arsonists. When San Francisco Police Department DET. Upfront Updates

The Firm on NBC (starting January 2012) to get a look on Abaza TV.
At first Abaza showed no interest in this show but since the realization of the involvement in Alyson Feltes this has changed. Her incredible work on Canadian shows "Traders" and "the Associates" shows her keen sense of drama and wonderful character development. It is scheduled to air Sundays at 9:00pm CST.

CBS 2011-2012 Fall Upfront

The new 2011-2012 schedule is as follows:

On Monday, the veteran How I Met Your Mother returns at 8:00 PM, to provide a strong lead-in for another young comedy, 2 BROKE GIRLS, at 8:30 PM. Ashton Kutcher joins the cast of the top-rated comedy, Two and a Half Men, at 9:00 PM, followed by returning freshman hits MIKE & Molly at 9:30 PM and Hawaii Five-0 at 10:00 PM.

On Tuesday, the #1-rated scripted series, NCIS, returns at 8:00 PM followed by the #2-rated scripted series, NCIS: LOS ANGELES, at 9:00 PM, providing a powerful lead-in to the new drama, UNFORGETTABLE, at 10:00 PM.

>> Unforgettable will get the PVR trial treatment. Poppy Montgomery is always good.


On Wednesday, SURVIVOR returns to the time period it improved 100% in viewers last season (8:00 PM). Criminal Minds, one of the top-rated dramas on television, is back at 9:00 PM, and is paired with CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION to form a strong two-hour crime drama block from 9:00-11:00 PM.

>>> I will miss Criminal Minds Suspect Behavior, but the move of CSI to this slot is interesting. I can see it retaining my attention, especially if they run promos during CM.
Criminal Minds will be on the Abaza schedule for sure.

On Thursday, CBS adds a new comedy and drama to the middle of the line-up, book-ended by two established hit series: television’s #1 comedy, The Big Bang Theory, returns at 8:00 PM, providing a strong lead-in to the new comedy, HOW TO BE A GENTLEMAN. J.J. Abrams’ new crime-thriller, PERSON OF INTEREST, joins the line-up at 9:00 PM, followed by the time-period winning drama, The Mentalist, as the night’s strong anchor at 10:00 PM.


>>> Big Bang Theory may end up on the schedule, but I dont watch it very often. How to be a gentleman was one of the pilots i was hoping they would pick up. So those two could end up on Abaza's schedule.

On Friday, CBS’s time-period winning, two-hour New York police drama block returns from 9:00-11:00 PM with CSI: NY and Blue Bloods. A unique new series opens the night at 8:00 PM with A GIFTED MAN, a medical drama with a spiritual twist.

On Saturday, original programming opens the night at 8:00 PM with Rules of Engagement, which will be paired with COMEDYTIME at 8:30 PM, featuring encore broadcasts of CBS comedies. The successful duo of CRIMETIME at 9:00 PM and the time period-winning 48 Hours Mystery at 10:00 PM closes the night.

Sunday night has an award-winning flare. The acclaimed and always top-rated 60 Minutes opens at 7:00 PM, followed by the seven-time Emmy Award winning series, THE Amazing Race, at 8:00 PM, leading into the critically acclaimed, award-winning drama, The Good Wife, at 9:00 PM. The always successful CSI: MIAMI caps the night at 10:00 PM.

period drama about a civil war soldier who crosses the country and settles into a complicated town where he is welcomed as its savior - whether he likes it or not. I love period pieces but hopefully there is a bit more action then the description makes it out to sound.

comedy about the staff at a plymouth plantation-type living museum that have people reenact the way the pilgrims once went about their days. Ed Begley Jr is a nut, so hopefully he plays one.
I'M WITH RUSSELL (Sit-Com) Russell Peters 8:30-9:00PM

comedy based on the life of the comedian, who was raised in canada to parents who had immigrated from india, was married earlier this year and is expecting his first child in 2011. Canada you say?
The Office 9-9:30. Solid.
JOIN THE CLUB (Sit-Com) 9:30-10PM

comedy about a disenchanted 30-year-old joins his step-grandfather's men's club and finds an unlikely group of friends where he least expected. Imagine that a sit-com which does not revolve around alternative lifestyles, mixed families, or chefs.
FORD COUNTY (Drama) 10-11PM

drama about the inhabitants of the mississippi region and their foibles. EP John Grisham. Fun with rednecks basically, hopefully its as funny as the short stories.

Programming Note

Next week is the big week of Network Upfronts, where the television networks unveil their prime time schedules for next fall. What used to be a behind the scenes event for advertisers and affiliates has turned into an event much like the NFL or NBA draft with lots of intrigue, guessing, and waiting.

Abaza TV will provide a one hour analysis each night next week May 16th - 20th of the 5 networks upfronts. We will look at their schedule, come up with our own dream schedule of what we would have liked to have seen, and talk about which shows might be picked up by Abaza TV next year.

The dream schedules will be what shows we would pick from their returning shows, shows cancelled this past year, and their developmental shows.
