The streetwalkers risk arrest from the cops and abuse from the johns. Even the call girls have a tough time: from their expenses to their lack of self-reflection. But everytime the Americans leave the village they are ambushed. Meanwhile, Horn has become fascinated with the Buddhists. During his visits with the priest in his search for understanding, Horn accidentally discovers how the GI's are being set up: it is the monks, using their temple bell.

Jack's deal with the gold mining firm nearly bankrupts the firm when a major investor pulls out. Jack insists Gardner/Ross can carry the additional cost of the loan, and in a daring set of trading moves single handedly saves the firm and sells the outstanding debt to private investors.
