Regardless of the cost cutting measures he's announced in memos, Mr. Carlson says that the station will pay for tickets to the awards banquet for Les and his date. With cues around him making him feel like he has no chance with women, Les asks any of the guys, like Herb or Andy, if they'd like to go to the banquet with him. Taking the bulls by the horns, Herb, as Les' pal, shows him how to ask women out so that he can get a real date for the banquet. Despite or because of Herb's smarmy pick-up tactics, Les is able to secure a date, specifically with Jennifer, who in large part wants to show Herb that decency, and not smarm, is what works. Les, in turn, wants to be what he considers a real man when he has Jennifer on his arm. Herb does a one hundred eighty degree turn in doing whatever he can to make the date with Jennifer not happen in his jealousy, he using an unwitting Mr. Carlson as his unsuspecting pawn.

Les, who never played any sports, including softball, when he was growing up, he stuck inside taking violin lessons instead, sees the game and the challenge as a rite of passage he never went through but should have as a child. No one else at the station wants to play, largely because they don't want to lose as, unaware to Les, WPIG plays in a city league and plays well. But a series of statements leads to the staff changing their minds and agreeing to defend WKRP's honor on the mound. As sports director, Les still wants to lead the team, including pitch, but quickly learns he is way out of his depth. And despite having played in college, Mr. Carlson shows that his softball prowess doesn't live up to the hype that surrounded him. Although they do devise ways to keep the game close, both Mr. Carlson and Les will literally and figuratively have to step up to plate if WKRP has any hope of winning. That task is all the more difficult as all Les can hear in his head is himself playing the violin, which, to him, is the antithesis of what he is now trying to achieve.

Tony, the former keyboard player, sets out only to find his former friends working as a roofer, a gardener and a hotel clerk. They all became rather everyday people, married or still single, they definitely are not wild and crazy anymore. Sally is concerned that the SEC may uncover an impropriety at Gardner/Ross, now that her father is incarcerated. She orders Marty to cease any and all trades that might be considered immoral, or unethical, even though they are all legal. He refuses and demands she either fire him, or get off his floor. Jack leaks a news story to the paper that Gardner/Ross is about to announce a major buyout deal. He sets forth to earn his pay by organizing a buyout of a smaller company, on behalf of a larger company. The only problem is that he has neither a buyer, nor seller. With only 4 days to go before the target date he must convince the owner of a large airline company to buy a new upstart company that has created a revolutionary type of GPS System. Unfortunately the CEO is a big time recluse that won't speak to anyone. Jack finds Ayn Krywarik, Gardner/Ross' best broker, works with this elusive CEO nearly everyday. Ayn loses a bet, and agrees to introduce Jack. Adam begins negotiations with a British Lord regarding the privatization of the last part of British Rail. Adam conscripts D'Arby to accompany him to London for a meeting about the deal, which unfortunately falls through once they return. An old friend of Marty (Benny) asks for a job. Sally agrees to hire him, provided Marty discontinue his 'shadowy' trades. Jack is able to negotiate the deal with the eccentric CEO, afterwards, him and Anne share a celebratory kiss.
