Top 300 Rock Songs Of All Time
#300-291

#300 Daydream Believer - The Monkees
you tube
Well the Monkees almost didn't get any songs on the list, but ended up with 2, including the much wanted final spot. A #1 hit in December of 1967, their last hit, had been shelved from a previous album, so it's easy to see this song almost didn't come to be. Covered half decently by Anne Murray.

#299 Honky Tonk Women - Rolling Stones
live from Hyde Park
So many "other" Rolling Stones songs that could compete for this spot, but I went with Honky Tonk Women because it seemed to make the top 100 or higher of many critics lists including Rolling Stone. Hit song from 1969. Written by Mick and Keith while on holiday in Brazil...but set in the Southern US. Go figure. "I met a gin soaked bar-room queen in Memphis". There will be much more from the Stoners yet to come.

#298 Dear Mr. Fantasy - Traffic
Santa Monica 1972
Instantly just from the title you know the slow, hypnotic tune. From 1967 (seems the countdown is so far limited to late 1960's, but I promise that will change), it was mostly driven by Steve Winwood. When he sings "something to make us all happy" why do I get the impression that he doesn't actually want to be happy? He just wants to "drop out".

#297 Nightshift - The Commodores
Nightshift
Perhaps the first "flyer" taken. It was a last minute decision. It's a catchy tune, and I ended up axing "Toto" from Africa to make room. A lot of the true R&B songs you see on lists like from Rolling Stone, dropped much lower in my list of right off. This is partly because I'm not a big fan of singers like Ray Charles, but also because some of these songs are not "Rock" even if they heavily influenced rockers. However, nightshift is one of those songs that is catchy right from the start and when you hear it, it puts a smile on your face. Written as a tribute to R&B legends Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye who both passed away in 1984. The song was released in 1985.

#296 - I Gotta Feeling - Black Eyed Peas
video
Okay, maybe this will be a mistake..but right now it seems like an anthem for today. Not a big fan of the song but it is catchy, and the Black Eyed Peas are deserving.

#295 - You Can't Hurry Love - The Supremes
original version
Summer of 1966, back to the late 60's..one of my favorite MoTown songs, the great voice of Diana Ross.

#294 - Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine) - The Penguins
earth angel
Rolling Stone had it as #151, for me, still on the list, but considerably lower. Catchy tune, not a lot of depth.

#293 - Lit Up - Buck Cherry
video
Wow, I thought this was another 2000's song, but it was actually 1999. Kick ass song, and the lyrics, well they are pretty intense.

#292 - All Right Now - Free
live
From 1970, UK, a great sing along song, and some great riffs.

#291 - Time is On My Side - Rolling Stones
fallen, opening
Well our 2nd song from the Stones. This one seems non-descript but once it gets into your head, it will stay for days. I really got into this song after it appeared in the movie "Fallen" with Denzell Washington. It was the Stones selection for their first appearance on Ed Sullivan Show.
