John contacts an old friend who's in IAB about Martinez's theories, but to protect Martinez from IAB, John takes a tape recorder in and gets Hanlon to talk. Laura's new job as an ADA takes a twist as she is assigned a case that involves Giardella.

Benjamin Hardaway, Jonah Gleason, Robyn Parsons, Mitch Barnsworth and Amy Kassan. Five of the most brilliant new minds are hired as the new associates at Young, Barnsworth & King, a big and successful law firm. Personalities and styles soon contrast against each other's as they try to adjust to their new jobs. Right on their first day, the young lawyers are faced with situations they have to contour. Hardaway finds himself with a human finger after mistakenly taking it from one of his boss's clients. The firm is invaded by reporters, who are investigating some of the partner's involvement with financial fraud. One of the accused partners jumps from the top of the building, even though Robyn did everything to keep him from doing so. She is shocked, and the new associates wonder if the scandal will affect their careers.

Jim Marsh (David Keith) and Randy Willitz (Cole Hauser) arrive at a crime scene where a young girl has been murdered and must notify her mother of her death. Gayle (Catherine Kellner) and Richie (Julio Oscar Mechoso) arrest a man after they catch him picking up prostitutes on two separate occasions.

Mike takes a job chauffeuring loanshark Jack Shannon, but begins to have doubts about the wisdom of doing so after Grizz and Marcellus warn him that he's headed down a slippery slope. After he's goaded into beating up a man to collect on a debt for Shannon, Mike realizes that his friends are right that he's headed for trouble, and tells Shannon he's quitting. Shannon tries to entice him to stay by offering to call in a favor with the District Attorney and have the case which led to Mike's dismissal from the force thrown out. Although he's sorely tempted, Mike turns Shannon down. After Mike leaves, Marcellus appears and is greeted warmly by Shannon.
